Why does the police have to seize people's vehicle that were used in drug stings?

Also if their vehicles end up being seized would the owners be able to get their vehicles back if it wasn't purchased with drug money?

If the vehicle is used in the commission of the crime, it can be seized.

You don't have to prove it was purchased with drug money, you only need prove it was used in to traffick drugs.

Any property used in the commission of a drug crime is seizable by law. This includes houses, boats, cars, you name it. If the authorities can prove that the property was connected with the drug trade, the offender can not buy it back.

The reason WHY this law began was that while drug pushers were being busted & released they were able to start back up as profitably as B4 b/c they still had all of their assets.

So the law was changed to make things harder for them to go back into business. Such as using their cars to transport drugs. A lot of these cars were modified to out run police. Now with seizure laws, these same cars can be used by under cover detectives to out run drug transporters.

"Trooper" already answered why cars are not released. But another reason for this is so that friends of the drug dealer will not be so quick as to loan them another car to help in drug traficking.

Another reason for seizure is the cost to loss ratio of crimes.
Say you make $250,000 in one for your criminal activity. You finally get busted. You pay $50,000 for an atty. who could not get your off of charges. Maybe got a 5 year plea bargin instead of the 25 years you were looking at serving. In the course of investigation you lose $125,000 home, $5,000 computer, & $75,000 car to seizure b/c all were involved in the crime.

Take $250,000 minus atty fee, home, computer, & car and that leaves you with a $5000 LOSS. PLUS lost earnings of 5 years in prison. PLUS hard to find job, home, & credit upon release now that you have a felony conviction.

For criminals that can do basic math, they will see that a life of crime DOES NOT PAY, IT COSTS.

(I haven't even added in the human suffering for you, your family, friends & victims of crime.)
