It all depends on the age/quality of car, drive ability, if it runs, and if anyone else shows up and bids on the car you want. One can get a running car as low as $5, but be aware, you need to be prepared to spend money on repairs. The car is being auctioned as somewhere along the line, someone did not redeem it, therefore it was declared abandoned. Sometimes the charges are too much to make it worth a guy redeeming his car, but usually they have problems and someone washed their hands of it, so buyer beware, but have fun.
It depends on your knowledge of car values (so that you don't over bid) and your bidding skills (in case there are other people who want the same car you want). Some police auctions are for surplus vehicles that are being replaced by newer vehicles. In this case, the vehicles are pretty well worn. But most police auctions are for impounded or vehicles seized from criminals. These vehicles can be brand new luxury cars (from rich drug dealers) to junkers seized from low-life criminals. As a general rule, police auctions are well publicized and the cars are well worn.
They arent absolute steals. But you can find a decent buy at one.
Most auctions that are open to the public cars are going to sell for wholesale or higher.
You cant expect to buy a car at half its wholesale value.
If you could, dealers would flock to them, quickly resell the cars at dealer auctions and double their money.
Thats just not realistic.
