I have a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle that was given to me by my uncle. My stepdad and I first tried to crank the engine with a wrench without success, and then tried putting oil on the cylinders and towing the car and then dropping the clutch while the car was in gear. None of this has helped us to unfreeze the engine. Does anyone know if there is any way we can get the engine running again without having to take it out and completely rebuild it?

If it is locked up then it must be replaced.

I haven’t heard of any way to unfreeze an engine, in you situation.

My best guess would be pulling it and rebuilding, if you want to keep that engine.

it needs to be rebuilt. You won’t make it run any other way.

NO ——IF PULL STARTING WONT BREAK IT LOOSE ——GET A GOOD USED MOTOR OUT OF A U-PULL IT JUNKYARD——-CHECK THE FLYWHEEL TO THE CRANKSHAFT BOLTS —-IF THEY ARE TOO LONG THEY WILL HANG UP IN THE WEBS AND LOCK UP A GOOD ENGINE

if it’s rust seized then take the spark plugs out, pour some marvel mystery oil or something similar down cylinders and let it set for a week or so. After that then take the wrench to crank with everything out of gear. If that doesn’t work pour some more in and let set for another week. If after the 2nd try it doesn’t free up then it’s time to tear it down.

If it threw a rod, or some other internal interference, DO NOT TRY TO ROTATE THE CRANK OR START ANYMORE. Tear it down and see what’s damaged and replace anything that is damaged or out of factory specs. If it’s never been cracked before then a full rebuild would be advisable

Um not likely to unlock it up ur going to have to pull it and tear in to it I had a small block 350 that was froze up I had to pull the heads of and I pores tranny fluid in a few of the cylinders came back 2 days later with a hammer and a piece of wood and hammerd them out in all reality I replace pistions crank well let’s just say I replaced every thing. But the block sorry but ur better off going to look for a new motor cheaper then rebuilding that one spacialy if u can’t even get it to break loose from a roll. But for shure ur looking and new pistons, rings, gasket kits, and some macheine shop work if your looking at trying to save thestock motor good luck hope this helps also was it frooze up from sitting to long or ran low on oil??

hi ,not much can be done if seized up really,1 fill up engine with oil kero mix and let it sit for some time as well as putting it down intake manifold as well.drain pil out and try winding over.put a big socket on a big breaker bar with a lenght of pipe on it and give it a good shot.try giving crank a good hit with hammer make sure you use a wood block inbetween so you dond damage end of pulley.is the gearbox ok or locked up check, brakes locked up rear, good luck
